2008 dodge ram review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Never before have trucks been more capable for hauling and towing nor more competent at coddling passengers. There is no mistaking a ford f-150 for a nissan titan or a toyota tundra, nor even confusing a chevy silverado with a gmc sierra. Any one of them would be a good choice from a consumer's point of view.  but it was the ram that started the high-style-truck trend back in 1994 when dodge took a risk with a bold, retro big-rig design. That truck transformed ram from a bit player with staid styling to a big-stage event. The dodge ram has run with the big boys ever since, sometimes leading, sometimes trailing, but always solidly on the bill. Whether the '08 ram is merely as good as the trucks listed above, or somewhat better, is more a matter of personal preference than anything else.  the dodge ram 1500 light-duty pickups are smooth and refined. Their cabs are comfortable and convenient, among the roomiest in their respective classes. The quad cab is handy for hauling friends and family but even the regular cab is roomy.  arguably, the ram is the best-looking truck on the market. Its styling is bold and handsome, even more so in its latest incarnation.  ram was extensively re-engineered for 2006, with a new hydroformed frame that's boxed its full length; plus new suspension and body mounts that improved ride, handling, and quietness. That same year, ram was modestly restyled inside and out.  the 2008 model year brings new life to the 4. 7-liter v8, with horsepower up 31 percent to 310 hp and torque up 10 percent to 330 pound-feet. Other updates to the 2008 dodge ram lineup include simpler maintenance intervals, trailer sway control added to the optional stability system, available tire pressure monitors, new steering hardware for 4wds, dark maple woodgrain trim on laramie, and two new colors right out of the muscle car age: sunburst orange and detonator yellow.  ram's optional hemi engine delivers power and efficiency. The switchover is seamless, and fuel economy is improved by as much as 20 percent, says dodge. Step on the gas, however, and the cylinders reawaken, ready to deliver the 345 peak ponies that make the hemi-powered ram one of the most exciting light-duty pickups on the market. Several engines are offered: a 3. 7-liter overhead-cam v6, 4. 7-liter v8, and the 5. 7-liter hemi v8. Several trim levels are offered:  st is the base model with vinyl upholstery and wind-up windows. St comes standard with air conditioning, tilt steering, variable intermittent wipers, 40/20/40 vinyl seat, am/fm/cd stereo, rear-wheel abs, 17-inch steel wheels and a full-size spare tire, and a v8 and electric-shift transfer case on 4wd. Options parallel those on the st, although the stx is the trim level for the trx4 off-road package.  slt comes standard with the 4. 7-liter flex-fuel v8, six-disc cd changer, carpeting, power windows/door locks/heated mirrors, overhead console with mini-trip computer and compass, cruise control, and 17-inch painted aluminum wheels. Options include a navigation system, sirius satellite radio, uconnect bluetooth hands-free wireless communication, 5. 7 v8, on-demand 4wd, bucket seats, six-way power driver seat and 20-inch aluminum wheels. A power sunroof and a rear-seat dvd entertainment system are available for slt quad cabs.  the sport group for the slt comes with the hemi engine and five-speed automatic transmission, unique cloth-faced bucket seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, body-color grille and bumper fascia, fog lamps, and 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. Options are the same as for the slt.  laramie is the luxury trim level, offered only as quad cab automatic. Leather seats are standard, with a heated, split 40/20/40 bench up front and power adjustment for the driver. Options include navigation, power sunroof, adjustable pedals, and electronic upgrades.  safety features include optional side-curtain airbags designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover. We recommend getting them; head injuries are the leading cause of death in side impacts. An electronic stability program (esp) is optional. walkaroundthe 2008 dodge ram presents a bold, distinctive appearance with its big horse-collar grille and freightliner fenders. The concept dates back a dozen years, but it received a major redesign for 2002 and a makeover for 2006. The headlamps cut back deeper into the fenders, and a flattened front bumper on sport and laramie emphasizes ram's big-rig image. A slot in the front bumper aids engine cooling and air conditioner performance.  ram's trademark front grille remains one of the most instantly recognizable front ends on the road. A thick band of chrome surrounds the grille on st, slt and laramie; the band is body color on sport models. The broad, sloping hood has a pronounced crown that falls over the sides to the prominent front fenders, helpful for clearance, less so for seeing edges in tight quarters.  a fast, raked-back windshield enhances aerodynamics and water management, while gracefully blending modern sleekness with ram's retro lower body. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smooth transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smooth and integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are mounted on platforms to minimize wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keep water off of the mirrors. That seems high when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. All beds are fitted with boat cleats designed to handle 1,000 pounds each.  ordering the long bed adds 20 inches to the wheelbase of a dodge ram. And a quad cab wheelbase is 20 inches longer than a regular cab. So a quad cab long bed has 40 more inches of wheelbase than a regular cab short bed. Long-bed rams also get a bigger fuel tank, 35 gallons in place of the standard 26 gallons; some of the latter offer a 34-gallon option. interiorthe dodge ram is among the roomiest of the full-size pickups, and its cab is a pleasant place to be. It sacrifices a few inches of bed space for interior space.  regular cab and quad cab versions offer identical roominess in the front seats. Standard front seating in the ram is a bench split 40/20/40. The narrow center section features a large fold-down armrest with a compartment big enough to hold a laptop.  we've found both the cloth and the leather seats comfortable. The driving position is good, with good visibility in all directions, though the aerodynamic front end makes it impossible to see the front corners. Big mirrors on the ram make it easy to see what's behind.  we found the bucket seats in the sport version comfortable and supportive and the sporty fabric looks durable. The latest fabrics, first introduced with the 2007 models, are designed to be more stain and odor-resistant than before, while also reducing static cling. Laramie models get silver trim adorning the door panels and instrument bezels. Laramie comes with distinctive leather trim, with higher-contrast color seat inserts.  the ram interior shows attention to details that add utility and convenience. The big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. A hook on the passenger-side floor well is provided for securing a plastic grocery bag or anything else with suitable handles.  premium amenities such as the full-screen gps navigation radio and bluetooth hands-free communications are available, along with a rear-seat dvd system for quad cabs. We found the navigation radio to be a nice design and relatively easy to operate; these systems are getting better all the time and the latest chrysler group's systems work quite well.  overall, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls that gives the center dash a nice look and feel.

2002 ford focus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New zx5 adds more practicality to the fun. introductionford focus is the world's best-selling car. It's also one of the most enjoyable compacts in its price range. It's fun, it's practical.  the focus has won safety kudos from the federal government. The svt engine, however, comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.  sedans are the most popular of the focus models. The sedan is available in three trim levels: entry-level lx 12,845), an upgraded se 14,350), and the 130-horsepower zts 15,355).  three-door hatchback models are available in zx3 trim or the high-performance svt model. The zx3 12,470) is a sport compact, and comes with all the requisite hardware: the 130-horsepower twin-cam engine, 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels, and fog lights. Its wild styling makes the hatchback look sportier and even more distinctive than the sedan. Power windows, mirrors and locks, and keyless entry are now available 740), along with optional cruise control.  wagons are available in se and ztw trim. Se 16,640) se comes standard with the 130-horsepower dohc zetec engine and a choice of manual or automatic transmission. New for 2002 is the ztw wagon 17,735), billed as an enthusiast's sport wagon; ztw comes equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, and a six-disc in-dash cd changer. Zx5 comes standard with the 130-horsepower zetec engine, 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, six-disc in-dash cd changer and much more.  also new for 2002 is the focus svt 17,505). Based on the three-door zx3, it has been modified by ford's special vehicle team (svt) to produce 170 horsepower. Svt boasts a getrag six-speed manual transmission, svt-tuned suspension, special trim including a rear spoiler, and more. Only about 7500 will be made, all for north america.  ford's advancetrac 1225) vehicle dynamics system is on the option list for all focus models. Described below, advancetrac includes rear disc brakes and traction control, but requires ordering the optional anti-lock brakes 400).  other optional safety equipment includes side-impact air bags 350). Cruise control is also an option. walkaroundford's new edge styling features tidy creases that define intersecting arcs.  large pie-section headlamps give the front end a distinctive appearance. Several models have fog lamps in the grille opening below the front bumper. There's a similar, but smaller opening above the bumper that houses the turn signals. Both are outlined by arcs. The front and rear fenders are highlighted with geometric curves creased into the sheetmetal.  the roofline is highly arched, particularly noticeable when parked next to another car. The roofline is truncated just aft of the rear axle line. Wedge-shaped tail lamps set in the c-pillars enliven an otherwise plain rear end of the zx3 and zx5. Ford claims the tail lamps are more noticeable in that location and reduce repair costs in minor accidents. However, the sedan and wagon have conventionally placed tail lamps, so we'll accept the unique shape and location as distinctive and effective styling.  lower bodyside pvc coating provides protection from stone dings on all models, and the underbody gets pvc coating as well. Clearcoat paint is standard across the board.  zx3 and lx have black rather than body-color bodyside protective molding, but this is offset on the zx3 by black rocker panels. The door handles on all models are black as well. The door handles on black cars blends in, but black also masks the distinctive lines of the focus that are accentuated by the brighter colors. interiorthe focus is designed from the inside out for maximum interior space within the confines of a compact body. Elevated seating height provides more comfortable legroom.  the front seats are cushy comfy, well bolstered for side support. The seats have an exceptionally high hip point, 20 inches above the ground. The advantages of this seating include a better view down the road, plus more effective leg room front and rear, and it takes advantage of the high roofline with headroom for the long and tall. It also makes entry and exit easier. The manual height adjustment on the zx3 allows almost everyone to find a comfortable position behind the wheel and an easy arm's length away from the manual shifter.  ford's new edge styling extends to the interior. The dash is a collection of arcs, the instrument panel covered by an asymmetrically curved and sharply creased bezel. The fuel gauge has a small arrow pointing to the right, denoting on which side the filler is located, appreciated by those of us who drive a number of cars, have bad memories or both.  a 7000-rpm tachometer flanks a 140-mph speedometer in the zx5. Both instruments are round and easily readable, clearly marked with white numerals on black, though the tach has no redline.  the center dash panel is formed by an arc that sweeps upward across the dash to the right side of the car and an inverted parabola. In the zx5, zts, and ztw it's finished in brushed aluminum instead of black. The radio fits into the top of this area and includes a six-disc cd player, but no cassette player. Snuggled into the top left is a 12-volt power outlet and trinket tray where the cigarette lighter and ash tray formerly were. Circular ventilation controls, less frequently accessed, fit below the radio and are styled in the new edge theme, with buttons styled to fit the room available.  the trunk release, on the left end of the dash, is triangular as well, shaped to fit into the intersection of the arcs outlining the instrument panel.  with its asymmetrical design, the interior looks both informal and rich at the same time. Control knobs all have distinctive shapes for easy identification. Rotary controls are rubberized for pleasing soft-touch operation. The steering wheel on the zx5 is leather-covered and satisfying to touch. Even the plastics used on the dash and door panels have a finger-friendly soft-touch feel. Once there, rear-seat riders have lots of legroom, thanks to widely spaced runners under the front seats, plus adult-sized head and shoulder room. Fold the back seat of the zx3 or zx5 and there's 18. 5 cubic feet of cargo space (yes, for either) and a big door for access. The versatility of the hatchback design is lost on many americans, who prefer the more formal sedan profile with its conventional trunk. But hatchbacks are making a comeback in america, and the design is hugely popular among europeans for its practicality.  focus wagons offer the largest cargo capacity in their class. Fold the rear seats down and there's 55. 8 cubic feet of cargo capacity or 37. 5 cubic feet with the rear seats in place. driving impressionbehind the wheel, the ford focus is an enjoyable car. The 130-horsepower engine answers a heavy foot with surprisingly rapid acceleration, a benefit of a lightweight car with well-developed torque characteristics. Fully 80 percent of the engine's maximum torque is available from idle to 6000 rpm; peak torque of 135 foot-pounds comes at 4500 rpm. Making the zx3 even more satisfying to drive is ford's excellent control of noise, vibration and harshness in this engine. In the zx3, we noted that the clutch take-up is good and easy to modulate. Shifting into first gear reveals a rubbery feel to the linkage of the long-shafted shifter. Left in drive, it operates like a conventional american automatic. That is to say it's as dependable as sunrise, but not as exciting. It does have an overdrive-off button, plus d2 and d1 slots, but it lacks the sporty feel and effect of the manual gearbox. Also, fuel economy drops from an epa-rated 33 mpg on the highway with the manual to 31 mpg with the automatic.  still, the zx5 doesn't act like an economy car. 2007 hyundai santa fe review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new crossover suv suited for the suburbs. introductionhyundai is on a roll. Its vehicles are proving to have the reliability and quality people expect from japanese cars. The hyundai santa fe is all-new for 2007 and early indications are that it could be a true alternative to the toyota highlander.  the santa fe is a so-called crossover suv, meaning it's built like a car, using unibody construction instead of the body-on-frame construction of a traditional truck. It's a practical vehicle for everyday use.  completely redesigned, the new 2007 hyundai santa fe is attractive. It blends into the suburbs nicely, shedding the quirky looks of last year's model. The new santa fe is smooth and quiet and handles well on winding, paved roads. Yet it retains hyundai's value quotient. lineupthe 2007 hyundai santa fe comes in three trim levels: gls, se, and limited. All-wheel-drive is offered as an option 2,000) on all models. Active safety features include antilock brakes, electronic stability control, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.  the gls 20,945) is powered by a 185-hp 2. 7-liter v6 engine. It comes standard with cloth upholstery, a five-speed manual gearbox. The gls is well equipped with air conditioning, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, 112-watt am/fm/cd/mp3 audio system with six speakers, rocker panel moldings, heated power side mirrors, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, 16-inch alloy wheels, and a roof rack with rails.  the se 23,645) has a more powerful, 242-hp 3. 3-liter v6 with a five-speed automatic transmission with shiftronic and 18-inch alloy wheels. In addition to the equipment found on the gls, the se adds electrochromic auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, front fog lights and steering wheel audio controls. An optional premium package 1,600) adds a power driver seat with power lumbar support, a power tilt/slide glass sunroof, heated front seats and homelink. The ultimate package 3,850) includes the premium package features, plus a rear-seat entertainment system with an eight-inch lcd monitor, 252-watt am/fm/cd-changer/mp3 audio system with seven speakers (including subwoofer) and external amplifier, and a 115-volt power outlet in the rear cargo area.  the limited 25,945) adds leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, power driver seat with power lumbar support, dual zone automatic temperature control with outside temperature display and homelink. A chrome grille and exterior door handles, as well as a body color hatch spoiler, distinguish the limited. The ultimate package 3,550) includes a sunroof, rear-seat entertainment system with an eight-inch lcd monitor, a 605-watt infinity logic 7 surround sound am/fm/cd-changer/mp3 audio system with 10 speakers (including subwoofer) and external amplifier, 115-volt power outlet and power front passenger seat.  xm satellite radio and a navigation system will be available on later models.  the santa fe includes hyundai's bumper-to-bumper warranty of five years/60,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of 10 years/100,000 miles. walkaroundcompared to the previous-generation model (2006 and earlier), which was polarizing with its curvy lines, the new hyundai santa fe blends in with other suvs in its segment.  hyundai says the new santa fe evokes the assertive grace of a speed skater with a relatively long wheelbase and short overhangs. Some would say it looks like a smaller version of the volkswagen touareg, which is not a bad comparison.  the most noticeable attribute of the santa fe's front is the complete absence of a bumper. Instead the front valence curves around from beneath the body to encompass the large grille and wrap around headlights. The hood slopes up toward the raked windshield and the wedge shape continues along the lower edges of the side windows that sweep up dramatically toward the tailgate.  even the rear has distinctively curved lines with high mounted taillight clusters that are partially mounted on the main body and the tailgate. The easy to see and easy to grab tailgate handle is definitely a santa fe design cue.  although the new santa fe is slightly larger than the previous model, it looks smaller because its styling is more refined and it looks less like a truck. interiorpleasing is the best way to describe the interior of the hyundai santa fe as it features modern plastics with a soft touch feel. All models include blue accent lighting at night to illuminate the instruments, switches and the edges of the front cupholders. Even the base gls has nice luxury touches that include realistic looking, but fake wood-trim accents across the width of the dashboard, surrounding the shifter and along the door panels.  the gauges are mounted in a large instrument pod in front of the steering wheel. The radio and climate controls are well located in a center stack that is mounted high in the dashboard for easy reach and observation while driving.  according to hyundai's measurements, the headroom and legroom is greater in all rows than in competing models thanks to a uniquely designed unibody that is not based off an existing car platform, thus allowing the engineers to maximize interior space without compromise.  with the optional third row of seats folded down there is a generous 34. 2 cubic feet of storage space on an almost flat floor. Fold down the middle row of seats and there is 79. 3 cubic feet of storage space. Although the santa fe is one of smallest midsize suvs in exterior dimensions it is far from being the smallest inside, a tribute to its space-efficient design.  the air vents for the center row of seats are mounted in the b-pillar, which is much more effective than being mounted down low behind the center console, as in many vehicles.  we did not get to try a model with the third row of seats. Additionally, one loses the very practical hidden storage space under the rear floor when the vehicle is fitted with the optional third row of seats. driving impressionnobody can really expect an suv, even one built using a stiff unibody, to handle as well as a sedan. However the new hyundai santa fe comes mighty close. The steering has a pleasant feel, neither too tight nor too loose, the brakes work well if not dramatically, the ride is smooth and the vehicle is quiet.  the gls comes with the smaller of two available v6 engines and is available with a manual transmission, which is a unique combination in the u. We haven't had a chance to check it out and hyundai admits few people will buy one, but a manual transmission is available for drivers who want one.  we briefly drove a santa fe with all-wheel drive and on dry pavement it did not feel any different from the front-drive model. All-wheel drive is designed to improve handling stability and traction on slippery surfaces.  all santa fe models include electronic stability control with traction control.  the best value may be the front-drive se model, which has the same high-tech aluminum engine and transmission as the limited. summarythe hyundai santa fe is the same size as the toyota highlander, but it costs less. Judging from hyundai's performance in j. Power and associates quality studies, hyundai's vehicles are right in there in terms of quality and reliability as well. The santa fe is a so-called crossover suv, meaning it's built like a car, using unibody construction instead of the body-on-frame construction of a traditional truck. It's a practical vehicle for everyday use. It comes in three trim levels: gls, se, and limited. All-wheel-drive is offered as an option on all models. Safety features that come standard on all models include dual front airbags, front seat side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. Active safety features include antilock brakes, electronic stability control, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. For 2007, the hyundai santa. 2008 ford fusion review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid midsize sedan. introductionthe 2008 ford fusion is an excellent choice among midsize sedans and should not be overlooked. The v6 comes with a six-speed automatic, a feature associated with top-end luxury cars. Both engines provide adequate power and fuel economy though they are outperformed by the engines offered by several competitors.  fusion's ride quality is as good as any car in the class, save perhaps the toyota camry. Available all-wheel drive and a new sport package make fine handling even better.  the cabin is comfortable and well designed with controls that are intuitive and easy to operate. An optional sport appearance package comes with a firmer suspension and sporty interior and exterior styling cues. Antilock brakes and a tire-pressure monitor are now standard, while rear obstacle detection becomes an option. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, a five-speed automatic transmission is optional 875). The se is available with the v6 21,445) or v6 and all-wheel drive 23,295).  the sel 19,400) adds automatic headlights, automatic temperature control, upgraded cloth interior, upgraded wood or piano black interior trim, leather wrapped steering wheel, analog clock, heated outside mirrors, keyless entry keypad, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and p225/50r17 tires on aluminum wheels. The sel is also available with the v6 22,150) and with the v6 and all-wheel drive 24,000).  a new sport appearance package 895) is offered on front-drive v6-powered models. It includes sport-tuned suspension, black chrome grille, decklid lip spoiler, p225/45r18 tires on aluminum wheels, dual chrome exhaust tips, a brushed aluminum radio surround, red seat inserts, and red stitching on the seats, steering wheel and center console.  leather seating 895) is available for the se or sel. Other options include a dvd-based navigation system 1,895) that adds voice-activation for 2008, sirius satellite radio 195), rear spoiler 295), heated front seats 295), and a moon and tune package 795) with a power moonroof and audiophile stereo with six-disc cd changer and eight speakers. Also new for 2008 are ford sync entertainment and communications system 395) and ambient lighting 295), which illuminates the front cupholders and front and rear footwells and is offered in seven colors.  safety features on all models include dual-stage front airbags; seat-mounted, torso-protecting front side airbags; side curtain airbags for head protection in both rows; tire-pressure monitor; latch child-seat anchors; rear-door child-safety locks. Abs comes standard on all 2008 fusion models. Traction control is standard on all-wheel-drive models, optional on se and sel front-drive models 95). Rear obstacle detection is optional 295). walkaroundthe ford fusion has presence, unusual among midsize sedans that tend to blend in to the scenery. Some people, including us, like the aggressive, angular look of the fusion, some don't. We'd like to note that polarizing designs are often more successful than bland designs that neither offend nor excite anyone. In short, we think this is a good-looking car.  the styling features large headlights and a bold grille. Three thick chrome bars across the grille have a razor-like appearance and make the car look more upmarket than its pricing might suggest. The front bumper almost disappears as there are two chrome strips below it that match the ones on the grille.  when the fusion was first introduced, ford executives said its three-bar horizontal grille would become the signature styling cue for ford cars. Since then it has been seen on concept vehicles, as well as the edge crossover vehicle and the new taurus and newly restyled focus. A fold along the top edges of the front fenders runs all the way back along the edge of the roof to the rear deck.  the fusion features a wide track, which makes it stand out on the freeway when viewed from behind. A high trunk line and large triangular taillight clusters with chrome trim give the rear end a classy look.  the overall effect is pleasing. The chrome on the car contrasts nicely with the body work, especially on dark-colored models or red. Gaps between body panels seem a bit larger than those on some of the other cars in the class.  all-wheel-drive models have awd badging on the rear deck. While the 17-inch wheels that drive the awd sel models are the same design, they have a tell-tale hash mark to identify all-wheel-drive models.  the sport appearance package features a black chrome grille, color-keyed fog lights, a unique rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tips, and most notably, 18-inch aluminum wheels on lower profile tires.  the fusion fits into the ford car lineup between the compact focus and the big taurus sedan. It has much the same dimensions as its competitors. Although the fusion shares its basic floorpan with the mazda6, its wheelbase is two inches longer and it is an inch or so wider. Ford also says fusion has a stiffer bodyshell than the mazda6, which is good because a rigid structure is the key to a smooth ride and responsive handling. interiorthe cabin of the ford fusion is comfortable and benefits from straightforward controls.  the front seats manage to be slightly soft, yet supportive enough for long drives. A standard tilt and telescoping steering wheel and the six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, standard on the se and sel models, helps drivers get comfortable, be they short or tall.  in keeping with its european influence, ford has chosen to go with the soft touch for surface materials, which is expected in a luxury car but not in a mass-market car. The car we drove had a dark charcoal interior so everything was finished in black. The optional two-tone interior, especially the dark stone and camel with faux wood trim looks more inviting. The lighter colored interiors look friendlier.  the dashboard is a straightforward design that runs horizontally across the car's width with just a binnacle above the instrument pod. Decent-sized buttons make the radio and climate controls easy to operate. The center console, door pockets, and front seatback pockets provide additional storage.  se and sel models have a front passenger seatback that folds down, making it possible to haul extra-long items. Heated front seats are an option on sel models with leather seating. Fusions equipped with the new sport appearance package have red seat inserts (cloth or leather) and red stitching on the seats, steering wheel and center console.  the new sync communications and entertainment system can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players. Voice commands and/or steering wheel buttons can be used to control all functions. Head and leg room measurements don't put the fusion at the top of its class, but the back seat feels roomier than the numbers suggest.  the fusion has a good-size trunk with a flat floor and low lift-over height, making it easy to load groceries, luggage or cargo. All fusion models include a 60/40 split rear seatback, which allow.

2005 chevrolet malibu maxx review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid mid-size sedan; practical maxx. introductionthe chevrolet malibu was launched to compete with the mid-size imports from japan. We were surprised by the acceleration performance from the v6 and delighted by the crispness of handling on winding roads. It feels firmer than the camry, but softer than the accord, a good balance, in other words. Malibu's solid structure is based on gm's new epsilon platform used by a couple of highly successful european sedans. Along with its compliant suspension, this gives the malibu a smooth, comfortable ride, yet allows for spirited driving. This is no mush-mobile. It's quiet underway. No question, this is a highly competent sedan that's practical and easy to live with.  where the malibu needs work is in the appearance department. Introduced as an all-new model for 2004, the malibu is better looking than the plain-looking previous model, but it's no raving beauty. That silver band across the front is designed to clearly identify this as a chevy, but it won't go down in history as a great design.  the malibu has something the imports don't: the maxx. Maxx is a longer-wheelbase variant, whose extended roofline and rear cargo hatch suggest a sporty station wagon. While malibu seems destined to disappear into a crowd, maxx looks just as determined to stand out and be noticed.  starting at just a hair under $19,000 and topping out below $25,000, malibu base prices are extremely competitive with the prices of the honda accord and toyota camry, which can approach $30,000 with options. The previous malibu ranked tops in the midsize car class in the j. Ls and lt versions come with a 3. 5-liter overhead-valve v6. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with traction control are optional 400). Side-impact airbags and head curtain airbags are optional for base and ls models 690) and we recommend them highly. A package 1,095) for the ls sedan includes: side curtain airbags; remote vehicle starter; carpeted floor mats; and six-way power driver's seat.  lt adds: automatic climate control; seat-mounted side-impact and side curtain airbags; front and rear reading lights; remote vehicle starter; leather seats; heated front seats; 6-way power driver's seat; seat cushion storage pockets for outboard seating positions; leather-wrapped steering wheel with steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls; leather-wrapped shift knob; two illuminated vanity mirrors in front; fog lamps; power and heated outside rearview mirrors; body-color rocker moldings; a rear spoiler; 16-inch tires and wheels. An optional package for the lt 1,230) includes a homelink transmitter for opening garages and security gates; a light-sensitive auto dimming rearview mirror, xm satellite radio and a power sunroof.  maxx is built in the same three trim levels: base 20,760), ls 21,260), and lt 24,405). But the base-level maxx is better equipped than the base-level sedan, and comes with the v6, cruise control, traction control, anti-lock brakes (abs), 16-inch steel wheels, power hatch release, and other highline features. Similar options packages are available for maxx. A dvd entertainment center with wireless headphones and a monitor that flips up from the front console 995) is available.  options for malibu sedan and maxx include: xm satellite radio 325 plus the $9. 99 monthly subscription fee); gm's onstar communications system 695); a power sunroof 725); and a rear spoiler for the sedan 175) or maxx 300). Three levels of audio are available, from the base am/fm stereo and cd player to the top-of-the-line system with an in-dash, six-cd changer, six speakers, and automatic volume and tone controls 300). A unique option is the remote starter 150), useful both in cold climates to warm up the car before the driver climbs in and in extremely hot climates to cool it down. walkaroundthe chevrolet malibu looks more contemporary than its bland predecessor, with more character and class. It also looks more substantial, giving the impression it's a more expensive car than it is. And it is, indeed, more substantial, slightly wider than the model it replaces.  the front features a chrome bar across the full-width of the car, with the familiar chevy bowtie in gold in the center. The bar along, along with malibu's squinty headlamps, attempts to invoke a family resemblance to chevy trucks, which have been highly successful in the marketplace, but the design execution didn't work as well on this mid-size car.  the rear of the sedan resembles the upright rears of european cars. And indeed, the malibu shares its structure with the highly successful german opel vectra and the swedish saab 9-3. Malibu is built on gm's new epsilon global platform, a front-wheel-drive architecture developed by a team of american, german and swedish engineers. Epsilon is also being used for the new pontiac g6. The bottom line is that the epsilon platform provided good bones for a new malibu sedan.  from the center post of its roof forward, malibu maxx is identical to the sedan. From there back, however, maxx is a different and more innovative vehicle. Maxx isn't larger than the sedan, but it is proportioned differently. At 106. 3 inches, the wheelbase of the malibu sedan stands at the small end of the mid-size spectrum. Maxx rides a wheelbase that's six inches longer, stretching 112. 3 inches. Yet in overall length the maxx is a half-inch shorter than the sedan (187. 8 inches vs. 188. 3). That gives the maxx very short overhangs, a good thing. Maxx is a half-inch taller than the sedan. Its roof is longer, its trunk shorter, increasing space for rear-seat passengers. interiorthe malibu looks as substantial inside as out. With 101 cubic feet of interior space, the malibu sedan is extremely roomy for five passengers. The seats are comfortable. The front passenger seat cleverly folds flat for carrying long objects such as skis. The rear seat splits and folds 60/40.  the interior is conservatively styled. Controls on the center dash are conveniently backlit for night driving. The heating and air conditioning controls were a little confusing, however. Likewise, the stereo seemed designed more for style than function, though it worked well. We thought the wipers were a little loud. And the triangularly shaped outside mirrors are small, limiting rearward vision more than we liked.  otherwise, it's a convenient interior. Its rear seat is split 60/40 not only in the back, but in the cushion; and each unit slides fore and aft as much as seven inches to adjust between passenger and cargo room. Rear-seat passengers sit farther back in the maxx and enjoy nearly identical room as the front-seat occupants, and as much as the rear-seat riders in a full-size domestic sedan. Maxx's rear seatbacks also recline for improved comfort. In short, the back seats of the maxx are a comfortable place for adults.  standard in the maxx is a fixed skylight over the rear seating area, so rear-seat passengers can see clouds by day and stars by night. Or they can close their individual sunshades.  back in the cargo bay, maxx provides 22. 8 cubic feet of space, vs. 15. 4 for the trunk of the sedan. Fold down maxx's back seats and the available space expands to 41 cubic feet. There's a 12-volt power outlet way in the back in addition to the two up front that it shares with the sedan.

2009 chevrolet cobalt review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Now more powerful and economical. introductionthe chevrolet cobalt is a good option for inexpensive, high-value transportation. The cobalt is quiet and refined for a small car and it delivers crisp handling and a smooth ride, all benefits of its strong, rigid platform. With its all-around competence, the cobalt compares well with the honda civic, toyota corolla, and ford focus. This engine when equipped with the five-speed manual is being marketed as the cobalt xfe for 2009. Economy is further enhanced by new 15-inch low rolling resistance tires, and by a longer-legged (3. 63:1, vs. 3. 84) final drive ratio on manual transmission models. These are basic models with wind-up windows and manually operated mirrors. Tires are low-rolling-resistance 195/60r15s on 15-inch steel wheels. Options are limited, but include an automatic transmission 925).  cobalt lt 16,460) sedan and coupe get upgraded upholstery, adjustable lumbar support for the driver, power windows and door locks, and other amenities, including woodgrain trim. Options include cruise control 275), sunroof 750), seven-speaker pioneer audio 295), remote vehicle starter 190) for automatic models, heated leather seats 795), and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls and bluetooth wireless connectivity 245).  the 2lt option package 2,500) bundles abs; stabilitrak; the automatic transmission; color-keyed bodyside moldings; 205/55r16 tires on more stylish, plastic-faced wheels; cruise control; and a trunk cargo net. The sport appearance package 995) includes a rear spoiler, larger body-color fascias and rocker moldings; 17-inch polished aluminum wheels with performance tires; chrome exhaust tip; fog lamps; white-face sport gauges; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob; and steering wheel audio controls. A chrome exterior package 395) includes a chrome grille, bodyside moldings and door handles.  cobalt ss coupe and sedan 23,425) are powered by a 260-horsepower, 2. 0-liter turbocharged engine and come with upgraded suspension and brakes, sport seats with suede-like inserts, additional gauges, fog lamps, and spoilers and air dams all around. A heavy-duty five-speed is the only transmission offered. Tires are 225/40r18 summer-performance continentals on 18-inch forged aluminum wheels. A configurable lcd display 295) for the ss coupe allows the driver to select from a variety of performance measurements, including 0-60 mph and quarter-mile acceleration, braking performance and cornering grip (g load).  onstar comes standard on all models. It also includes the general motors advanced automatic crash notification (aacn) system, making crash data available to participating 911 centers to help them dispatch the appropriate live-saving personnel and equipment.  safety features include dual-stage front air bags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, rear center shoulder belts, and the latch child seat retention system. Head-curtain side airbags are standard on all models, as is a tire pressure monitor. Ss and 2lt come with stabilitrak electronic stability control. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are standard on ss and 2lt, optional 400) on lt and ls; the system includes traction control on cobalts with automatic transmission. walkaroundthe chevy cobalt is built on gm's delta platform, which it shares with the saturn astra and european-market opel astra. But with its single-bar grille and bowtie emblem, cobalt looks like a proper chevrolet small car right down to its shoes and socks.  body panel fits are extremely tight. So tight, in fact, that there are no rubber trim gaskets around cobalt's compound complex headlamps.  the coupe weighs about 50 pounds less than the sedan, an insignificant amount.  cobalt is longer, wider and lower than most of its direct competitors. Its interior dimensions and trunk capacity are comparable for the class.  the cobalt ss is distinguished by its front fascia with integrated air dam and projector-beam fog lights. Upper and lower grilles both sport a specific diamond-mesh texture. Rocker extensions are also unique to the ss, and a rear deck-lid spoiler is standard. The standard spoiler can be replaced with big wing. Materials are decent and the fit and finish are good. Overall, it's comparable for the class. There's just enough chrome trim here and there on knobs and instruments to brighten things up without a lot of glare from the shiny parts. Instruments are large, well placed, and easy to read, with nice graphic treatment throughout.  cobalt uses different seats in the different trim levels, each with detail changes in foam, padding and trim. We found plenty of fore/aft and rake adjustment for a 6-foot, 4-inch driver, plus seat height adjustment with a ratcheting handle. The lt seats were very comfortable and grabbed us in the fast corners exactly where we needed to be grabbed and held. Even better were the optional leather-trimmed seats, which come with electric heat.  inside the ss are sport seats embroidered with the ss-logo and enhanced with suede-like ultralux inserts. A specific gauge package includes an a-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge.  the available pioneer seven-speaker sound system with the delphi am/fm/cd delivers good sound and includes a huge subwoofer mounted on the left side trunk wall. The urethane steering wheel that comes on ls and lt models feels cheap. The leather-wrapped wheel that's optional on the cobalt lt is much nicer.  rear-seat passengers pay a price for the coupe's sporty looks. Headroom, legroom, and hip room are reduced by 2 inches, 1. 5 inches, and 3. 5 inches, respectively; enough to make the difference between a comfortable place for adults and one best left to pre-adolescents. Therefore, the coupe is a good choice for drivers who are usually alone or with a friend, while the sedan is the better choice for drivers who often find themselves with two or three passengers.  the trunk in the sedan is wide and deep with a low lift-over height, and almost 14 cubic feet of capacity, more than competitive in the class, though the opening to the trunk seems relatively small. The trunk lid uses outside corner hinges and two hydraulic assist struts instead of gooseneck hinges that can squash groceries when the lid is closed. The coupe has the same trunk volume but an even smaller trunk opening, making it difficult to stow a thick suitcase. A 60/40-split, fold-down rear seat with a trunk pass-through feature adds utility to both sedan and coupe. driving impressionthe chevrolet cobalt is quite pleasant to drive. It's quiet for a car that can be bought for less than $20,000. Chevrolet put considerable effort into special door seals, sandwich steel panels, thick carpets and pads, noise blockers and noise absorbers throughout the front, middle and rear of the car. As a result, normal front-seat conversation is possible at speeds above 90 mph.  we found the 148-hp engine used on 2008 models lacking in low-rpm power. For 2009, the rated horsepower is up slightly, to 155 hp, but more important the new variable valve timing system should fatten the torque curve considerably, making this 2. 2-liter engine feel more powerful through wider range of speeds.  epa-estimated fuel economy with the 2. 2-liter engine, manual transmission, and standard low-rolling-resistance tires is 25/37 mpg city/highway. With any of the larger tire options that slips slightly to 25/35 mpg, which is still within 1 mpg of any of. 2003 ford taurus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Refinements improve a solid sedan. introductionthe ford taurus is more than practical family transportation. It is a genuinely exciting mid-size sedan. New seals for the doors, windows and rearview mirrors along with new sound damping in the floor make for a quieter cabin. Illuminated cruise control switches have been added and the controls for the adjustable pedals have been moved to the instrument panel for easier access. New seven-spoke wheels add a fresh look to the 2003 models.  for 2003, more features come standard, including power windows and door locks, a tilt steering column and floor mats. Optional trim packages include a new sport package for the ses sedan. The wagon is available in se 21,345) and sel 23,170) versions. A choice of two 3. 0-liter v6 engines is available. This 3. 0-liter 12-valve v6 uses a traditional overhead-valve design. The vulcan v6 is rated at 155 horsepower and 185 pounds-feet of torque. Although not particularly quick from a standstill, once rolling it delivers more than adequate performance, along with a nicely rorty exhaust note. A flexible fuel version of the vulcan engine can run on e-85 ethanol, regular unleaded gasoline or any combination of the two in the same 18-gallon fuel tank.  ses is a popular choice and comes in standard and deluxe variations. Ses adds an in-dash single cd player, front bucket seats with six-way power and a manual lumbar adjustment on the driver's side. Also standard is ford's duratec v6, a more sophisticated engine with double overhead cams working 24 valves. This engine also displaces 3. 0 liters, but revs higher and produces 200 hp and 200 lbs.-ft. It comes with five-spoke aluminum sport wheels, a rear spoiler, special fender badging, pewter brushed interior trim, two-tone black and gray sport seats and special floor mats.  sel, available in deluxe and premium editions, adds seven-spoke machined aluminum wheels, a six-cd changer, leather-wrapped steering wheel, dark paledo wood-trimmed interior, automatic electronic temperature control, adjustable pedals and keyless keypad entry.  wagons are better equipped than their sedan counterparts. The sel wagon adds seven-spoke machined aluminum wheels, a six-cd changer, keypad entry and automatic climate controls.  key options for many models include a mach audio system 345), anti-lock brakes 600), cellport communications system 350), a power moonroof 895), and adjustable pedals 120).  . walkaroundthe ford taurus is a familiar design that has been with us for a few years now. The grille is broad, aggressive, and unmistakably ford-oval, grinning between the large cat's-eye headlamps. Its flanks undulate handsomely with crisp character lines, and its rear end bears a resemblance to the sexy stern of the jaguar s-type.  the sedan's trunk is of generous size and contains the mini-spare tire. The wagon has a flip-up rear window in its tailgate.  . interiorthe taurus cabin is functional and attractive, with controls that are straightforward and easy to use. The materials, switchgear and interior textures have a high-quality look and feel. For 2003, those controls are mounted in a new dashboard and console unit.  the other big interior change is the quiet, thanks to better noise, vibration and harshness controls that include better damping in the floor and measures that reduce air leakage and cabin noise, including the use of expanding foam in the windshield support pillars and various body cavities and the use of new sealing materials in weld access holes.  lx, se and the non-sport ses sedans seat six, thanks to a seating console between their separate front seats. Ford's well-publicized adjustable pedals make a comfortable driving position possible for even very short-legged drivers. The small-diameter steering wheel has a pleasingly thick grip. The cushions and seatbacks are more firm than soft, and firm is usually best on long drives.  the roomy rear compartment seats three, but is set up well for two as the seat forms two semi-buckets and has a pull-down central armrest containing two cupholders. A ventilation duct at the rear of the center console provides climate control for rear passengers. Dual baby-seat anchors are provided on each side of the rear seat. In the se wagon and ses and sel sedans, the rear seatback is split 60/40 and folds down, providing an enormous pass-through luggage capability for skis and other long items.  with its 60/40 split rear seats folded down, the roomy taurus wagon has space for a maximum of 81. 3 cubic feet of cargo; with six passengers aboard, there's still 38. 8 cu. Behind them.  . driving impressionthe ford taurus is a genuinely satisfying car to drive. Its duratec v6 is as responsive as a finger snap, delivering crisp acceleration from low revs straight through to the glass-smooth full-throttle shift point. This engine not only provides good thrust, it makes an understated but nicely throaty declaration that it means business. Its shifts are positive, authoritative, and at the same time, almost impossible to feel. Powerful front-wheel-drive cars like the taurus sel need traction control to reduce wheel spin and provide better control of the car.  the taurus chassis is a good match for this forceful duratec drivetrain. The fully independent suspension provides a smooth, impact-free ride. Taurus uses gas-pressurized shock absorbers, unusual in a family sedan; when pushed in the corners, it remains stable, nimble and ready for more. Cornered hard, its body roll is moderate, and the nicely tuned variable-ratio power rack-and-pinion steering delivers a steady stream of road information. Braking performance was much smoother than that of a dodge intrepid tested at the same time.  with its excellent chassis and duratec power, the ford taurus comes close to being a sports sedan for the price of a family mid-size sedan.  . summaryfor several years, the taurus has been the bowl of chocolate-chip mint in a sea of plain vanilla. While most sedans in the mid-size class seem designed to blend into the scenery, the taurus stands out like a wildebeest in plaid pajamas.  not only does the taurus look like it came from the future, it drives like it came from europe. Yet it comes with a price tag that's quite reasonable. Two engines are available, and both deliver a vigorous response, though we recommend the newer duratec engine. Taurus rides smoothly enough for family duty

2007 chrysler town & country review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The chrysler town & country is a luxurious minivan with an innovative seating design that adds greatly to its versatility. It combines the practical features of the dodge caravan with a higher level of equipment and style. Base and lower trims of the town & country are powered by a 3. 3-liter v6 rated at 180 horsepower, while a more powerful 205 horsepower 3. 8-liter v6 comes standard on more expensive trims. They come equipped with a tilting steering column, remote keyless entry, tire pressure monitor, 15-inch steel wheels and dual manual sliding doors. Upholstery is cloth and the second-row seat is a bench. The chrysler town & country is a carryover from 2006.

2011 jeep patriot review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Compact suv delivers affordable capability. introductionthe jeep patriot is unmistakably from the jeep garage, with its squared-off lines, seven-slot grille, and round headlights. The patriot and its sibling, the jeep compass, are based on a car platform, but still deliver moderate off-road ability.  for 2011, jeep patriot has been significantly updated. The 2011 patriot features fresh styling, upgraded suspension and steering, new interior materials, and a revised model lineup. There's adult-size headroom and legroom for rear-seat passengers. The smaller engine is 2. 0 liters, makes 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque and is epa-rated at 23/29 mpg with the manual transmission. The optional continuously variable transaxle works well and we found the auto stick manual-shift feature useful.  we found the patriot light and nimble on twisty roads and when maneuvering around town. The independent suspension works well. During a long day of driving on patchy two-lanes, hard-packed dirt roads, sandy off-road trails, shallow rivers and deep gullies, it delivered steadiness and comfort in every abusive situation.  the patriot is available with front-wheel drive or a choice of two all-wheel-drive systems, one that jeep qualifies as trail rated. Those who like to go off the pavement (or tow more than 1000 pounds) should choose the trail-rated freedom ii awd system. All-wheel drive versions also have the 2. 4-liter engine and rear disc brakes. Options include front side airbags 250), 17-inch aluminum wheels 640), air conditioning 895), media center radio 350), and the power value package 1,405) with remote keyless entry, power windows/door locks/heated mirrors. An all-weather group 795) adds tow hooks, block heater, floor mats, daytime running lights, aluminum wheels and p215/65r17 tires.  patriot latitude x 22,195) gets the big engine and rear disc brakes, chrome trim, climate control, leather upholstery, power driver's seat, sirius radio and a 6cd/dvd audio system. Options include upgrades to radio 290) with garmin navigation 695), boston-acoustics speakers 650), plus the sun & sound, security & convenience, and tow packages.  optional on any patriot are uconnect phone with bluetooth and/or web service and a smoker's package. The freedom ii off-road group 550) upgrades 4wd models with a bigger alternator, skid plates, electronic traction assists, tow hooks, floor mats, p215/65r17 tires and full-size spare; it requires the cvt2l automatic transmission 1050). (all new car test drive prices are manufacturer's suggested retail prices, which do not include destination charge and may change at any time without notice.)  safety features on all patriot models include dual front airbags, head-protecting curtain side airbags, abs with electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control, electronic stability control with rollover mitigation, and active front head restraints. Torso-protecting front side impact airbags are an option we recommend. walkaroundthe patriot has jeep's favorite styling cues, namely round headlights and seven vertical openings for a grille, in a boxy shape with fairly upright windshield and hatch. On patriot latitude x models much trim is done in bright surfaces but we find the body-color trim of the other models more appealing, and more befitting a jeep. Tow hooks and roof-rail crossbars are optional, and we'd prefer the fog lamps were further apart.  eschewing trends to make everything lower and more car-like, the 2011 patriot rides a little bit higher than the 2010 version and it has half-an-inch more ground clearance. To that end the rear bumper on the 2011 patriot is deeper and almost totally hides the muffler that looked like a large industrial afterthought on earlier versions.  the jeep patriot is considered a compact, although it looks larger. With a lot of space between front and rear wheels and overall length less than 15 feet, the lack of bodywork beyond the wheels adds dimension and improves backcountry accessibility. It's only a couple of inches from identical height and width and the ground clearance matches many heavy-duty pickup trucks.  the standard wheels are 16-inch steel. Attractive 17-inch aluminum wheels are standard on latitude and x models, and optional for the sport. The latitude x gets leather upholstery which previously seemed to overdress the patriot; it fits better in the revised 2011 interior but we're still adapting to jeep and leather in the same sentence.  interior materials have been revamped for 2011. The climate and sound system controls are easy to understand and operate. Jeep says the available uconnect tunes system can hold up to 6700 songs, which can be ripped from a cd or usb memory stick. We thought the doors sounded kind of tinny when they were closed.  the space between the seats includes a nook for change or cell phones, two fixed cupholders, and the parking brake lever. The center console is split for two levels of storage and is now padded.  the door pockets are on the small side, but they can hold six cd cases; much of the space is taken up by the 6x9-inch speakers. The door handles are easy to use. There's a nice tray over the good-sized glove compartment that's big enough for books.  the standard rear seat is a 60/40 split. It folds flat easily. Simply flip up the seat cushion and flop down the seatback. Reclining rear seats are optional, as is a flat-folding front passenger seat. With the rear seats folded flat, there's a spacious 54. 2 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Fold down the passenger seat, and the patriot has room for something eight feet long. With all the seats in use there's 23 cubic feet in the back, comparable with any compact suv.  the hatch glass does not open separately but the hatch itself isn't that heavy. A removable carpeted floor lines the cargo area and hides a real full-size spare tire underneath on most models. That cargo deck is a relatively high 31 inches off the floor so the maximum cargo height opening is 27. 4 inches, and taller people should watch their head beneath the open hatch. driving impressionthe jeep patriot comes with a choice of engines. The larger 2. 4-liter engine works best. It has good power, with 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque, and is responsive where it needs to be. The 2. 0-liter engine makes 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque and is epa-rated at 23/29 mpg with the manual transmission. The smaller engine needs to be revved quite a bit to make power, however. So for the minimal price difference and the extra torque, we recommend the larger 2. 4-liter engine.  the 5-. 2013 smart fortwo review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The smart fortwo with its small stature provides excellent maneuverability in the city. On the road, its exceptional fuel economy makes it a great commuter vehicle. The smart fortwo is available in either pure or passion trims. The pure is solely available in coupe form, while the passion is offered as a coupe or cabriolet. Power comes from a 1. 0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine mated to a five-speed automated manual transmission. Standard safety features include electronic stability program, anti-lock brakes, eight-airbags for the coupe, six-airbags for the cabriolet and tridion safety cell. For 2013, the smart fortwo has redesigned front and rear fascias which includes relocating the smart logo from the hood to the grille, a driver's armrest is now standard on passion trims as is a silver grille surround. 2008 jeep patriot review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Standard safety equipment includes anti-lock brakes, multi-stage front airbags, side airbag curtains, electronic stability control and electronic roll mitigation.  as it's programmed in the patriot, the optional continuously variable transaxle (replacing the automatic transmission) is too weird to be comfortable. The same cvt is used in the jeep compass, and it works well. The independent suspension is as good as the engine, delivering steadiness and comfort in every abusive situation we could find for it, during a long day of driving on every surface from patchy two-lanes, to hard-packed dirt roads, to sandy off-road trails, to shallow rivers, to deep gullies. For the off-road parts, we drove a jeep with the optional freedom ii off-road package that makes the patriot trail rated and raises the price by about $2000.  on twisty roads and maneuvering around-town, the patriot feels light and nimble. The turn-in is sharp. The body is well isolated from the wheels. This keeps the jeep under five mph and under control, going down steep hills, even icy ones. Air conditioning and cruise control do not come standard, and the windows, mirrors and door locks are manual.  air conditioning is optional 850). Power windows, mirrors and door locks with remote entry are part of a power equipment group 995). Another package has cruise control. A more complete package includes all those things plus tinted windows, map and dome lights, driver seat height adjustment, fold-flat front passenger seat, reclining rear seats, 115-volt outlet, foglamps and roofrail crossbars.  the limited 2wd 19,985) and 4wd 21,785) adds most if not all of the options in the groups, as well as 17-inch aluminum wheels, foglamps, passenger grab handles, chrome roofrails and other trim, and leather-trimmed seats.  a continuously variable transaxle is available for the 2. 4-liter engine as well as a 2. 0-liter engine.  the off-road package is called freedom drive ii, and uses the cvt with lower ratios; it adds skid plates, tow hooks, foglamps, all-terrain tires and a full-size spare tire. The freedom ii package is available for sport 4wd 19,175) and limited 4wd 23,130).  options include a trailer tow prep group with engine oil cooler and wiring harness 130); a 458-watt boston acoustic premium sound system with nine speakers and steering wheel controls 495); six-disc cd 320); 6cd with navigation 1395); yes essentials seating material 250); heated seats 250); sunroof 800); and 17-inch all-terrain tires 140).  safety features include frontal airbags, curtain airbags; electronic stability control, abs, electronic brake-force distribution. walkaroundthe patriot is unmistakably a jeep. It looks like a jeep all the way: more so than the stylish cherokee or big boxy commander. The windshield and backlight are relatively vertical, and the bumpers are defined and not molded into the fascia. It's almost exactly the same size as the new jeep compass but it looks more rugged, lacking the rounded edges of the gentrified compass. It looks more like a liberty, or maybe like a baby commander. It's classic, the way it should be. interiorthe seating position is high in the patriot, two inches higher than in the caliber; with the upright windshield, the forward visibility inspires confidence. Leather in the limited is great, but seems to overdress the patriot. The climate and sound system controls are easy to understand and operate. The vinyl panel, with a center stack trimmed in brushed aluminum-look plastic, doesn't try to be stylish; the lines are pretty square, but who cares?  the space between the seats includes a nook for change, two fixed cupholders, and the parking brake lever. A short armrest flips up to open the main console compartment, where there's a pocket for a cellphone or ipod. It slides forward three inches for shorter drivers.  the door pockets are on the small side, but can hold six cd cases; much of the space there is taken up by the six- by nine-inch speakers. The door handles are easy to use. That's the same as the compass and a couple inches more than the liberty, longest of the three.  the standard rear seat is a 60/40 split that easily folds flat, by flipping up the seat and flopping down the seatback. Reclining rear seats are optional, as is a flat-folding front seat. With everything folded flat, there's a spacious 62. 7 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and room for an eight-foot-long kayak, ladder or whatever.  with just the rear seats folded, there's still 54. 2 cubic feet; and with all the seats in use there's 23. 0 feet in the back, good for any compact suv. The rear cargo area is something called ultra floor, a washable and removable vinyl. No worries with dogs and lawn mowers. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter engine works well in the jeep patriot. Chrysler uses this 2. 4-liter world engine in a lot of vehicles. Depending on things like electronic programming and the transmission that's used, it feels different each time. In the jeep patriot, it feels great. Jeep has found the power, 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. That's good because left to its own programming, the cvt makes the patriot feel like it's powered by a big rubber band. It will go from 0 to 90 mph without shifting. In any case, that's the way cvts work.  and this is only under full throttle. The patriot can also lope along at 80 mph and a mellow 2600 rpm. The patriot forums on this should be interesting. At speeds below about 50 mph, when the cvt kicks down for better acceleration, it does so slowly and with a small thump. And often, in the mountains.  the five-speed manual gearbox was a relief, a joy to use, even with its long throw. The lever comes out of the center stack as it should, above the driver's right knee, an improvement over being on the floor near the right thigh. The five-speed made the patriot feel like a jeep. It brought out the potential of the world engine. It didn't try to mess with the power. The acceleration felt much stronger.  the suspensi. 2013 dodge dart review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A fixture at the entry end of the dodge lineup from 1960 through 1976, the dart was discontinued in 1977 and its badge went into mothballs, forgotten, but obviously not gone. Now it's been resuscitated, and affixed to this all-new line of compact sedans.  so the name is the same, and the new 2013 dodge dart occupies the same position in the dodge passenger car hierarchy as the original. But the similarities end right there. The first car to incorporate engineering elements from corporate parent fiat, the revival dart is a contemporary front-drive compact facing a considerably stronger competitive environment than its 20th century namesake. Does it have the chops to be a compelling alternative to the chevy cruze, ford focus, honda civic, hyundai elantra, kia forte, nissan sentra, mazda 3, subaru impreza, toyota corolla, and vw jetta?  the answer is a definite maybe. Although fundamental elements of its unitbody foundations were adapted from the alfa romeo giulietta, the snappy italian hatchback, they've been stretched to accommodate the sedan body style: longer wheelbase, longer overall, wider track, wider body. Epa fuel economy estimates range up to 41 mpg on the highway (for the yet-to-be-seen aero model). Suggested retail pricing for the five trim levels opens at $15,995 and climbs to $19,995 for the limited model. The sporty r/t version carries a $22,495 base price.  demerits: just one. For all the emphasis on the weight-saving benefits of high-strength steel, the darts are a little pudgy by compact standards. Listed curb weights start at 3186 pounds for a dart 2. 0-liter with manual gearbox and go as high as 3348 pounds for a model equipped with the 2. 4-liter engine and automatic transmission.  it might also be noted that the wide array of models and trim packages could pose an assembly quality challenge for the belvidere factory. A hint of forward-leaning rake, plus modest front and rear overhangs, suggests sportiness. The styling doesn't provoke many double-takes, however.  the design team took great pains with aerodynamics. The shape evolved through extensive wind tunnel time, and thoughtful details include active grille shutters that close to restrict radiator airflow when cooling air isn't needed, to reduce aerodynamic drag. The underbody is fully enclosed, and a rear diffuser manages underbody airflow to enhance stability.  the net of all the aero attention is a praiseworthy drag coefficient of 0. 285, enhancing fuel economy and also helping to minimize wind noise.  dodge signature elements for its latest offering are a new interpretation of the division's crosshair grille, and a taillamp treatment, adapted from the dodge challenger, that spreads across the entire rear end, incorporating 152 leds.  one other exterior note, that relates to the interior. At 183. 9 inches long, 72. 0 inches wide, and 57. 7 inches tall the new dart is one of the biggest of the current compact crop, and the designers have put those dimensions to work inside, creating one of the roomiest interiors (over 97 cubic feet) in this class. The 13. 1-cubic foot trunk can be expanded by folding the rear seatbacks forward. In the base model the seatback is one piece. In other trim levels it's a split-folding setup. interiorroominess is always a plus in a family sedan, but it's much more compelling when it's nicely appointed. Here, too, the dart scores well. Nothing inside these new cars looks cheap, even in the most basic model, and soft-touch surfaces abound, dashboard, door panels, center console and elsewhere.  the basic cloth upholstery is attractive and looks durable, denim inserts are offered in the sxt trim level, and leather is an option in the top-of-the line limited model. The seats are long-haul comfortable, with enough lateral support to feel sporty. Like all sedans, the cabin is rated for five, and like all of them the center rear position will accommodate an adult occupant about as far as the end of the driveway before complaints begin to fill the air. Foremost on this list is an 8. 4-inch touch-screen display, dominating the center dash of the higher trim levels (not available on the base dart). A nav system is offered for the limited model, as well as a configurable electronic instrument package and an led-powered light pipe surround for the entire instrument panel, which some may like, while others may find a bit garish.  like other carmakers, chrysler has taken notice of the success of ford's sync infotainment system and responded with one of its own, called u-connect. This appellation is a little difficult to fathom with the basic 2. 0-liter version, which doesn't feel very tigerish, particularly mated with the optional 6-speed automatic transmission. Its 160-horsepower rating is the same as that of the 2. 0-liter, but it generates more torque, 184 pound-feet versus 148. The trick with this engine is keeping it in the sweet spot of. 2012 chrysler 200 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Essentially a loaded chrysler 200 limited, the chrysler 200 s comes standard with the 3. 6-liter pentastar v6. The front-wheel-drive chrysler 200 competes with the ford fusion, chevrolet malibu, nissan altima, toyota camry, and possibly the lexus es and lincoln mkz. Midsize sedans comprise america's largest market segment for cars, with 1. 7 million units sold per year. The chrysler 200 has an old-school feel all its own that separates it from these other cars.  the chrysler 200 replaced the much-maligned chrysler sebring. It uses the same platform as the sebring, but engineers changed and strengthened so many things (chassis, engine, transmissions, suspension, brakes, body, interior) that it was almost a new car. It's american, well-equipped and inexpensive. Popular options are bargain-priced, among them a cold weather package and media center with touchscreen and 30g music hard drive.  the cabin is one of the quietest in the segment, thanks to new sound absorption materials, as well as an acoustic glass windshield, laminated side glass usually found in higher priced vehicles, and special engine mounting for the i4 engine. The instrument panel's gray-on-gray graphics are pleasing, and its white accent lighting is wonderful at night, with nice ambient cockpit lighting.  underway, we were quite impressed by how smooth and solid the 200 feels. It's put together well. Low road noise means a lot, and the quiet michelin tires and new exhaust system help. Chrysler calls it autostick, a name they've been using for 15 years, because they invented it, and they remain true to its blissful simplicity. A 4-speed automatic comes on the base lx model.  the 200 comes with chrysler's longstanding 5-year 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. lineupthe 2012 chrysler 200 lx 18,995) comes with the 2. 4-liter engine with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The 3. 6-liter v6 1,795) is optional and comes with an upgraded alternator, engine oil cooler, and dual exhaust with bright exhaust tips.  chrysler 200 limited 24,070) upgrades to leather upholstery, heated front seats, upgraded interior trim, remote start, touch-screen display, compass, outside temperature reading, 430-watt sound system media center cd/dvd with 40-gig hard drive, ipod input, bluetooth, u-connect hands-free phone, fog lamps, 18-inch polished aluminum wheels. The v6 is optional 1,795). Navigation is optional 695) and comes with sirius real time traffic and sirius travel link.  chrysler 200 s 26,365) comes standard with the 3. 6-liter v6 engine, boston acoustics sound system, leather, special front seats with suede inserts, heated front seats, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, 18-inch polished aluminum wheels with black trim, body color mirrors and door handles, and special trim: black-barred grille, headlights with black background, unique foglight bezels, and a black-inlayed winged chrysler badge. The chrysler 200 front air dam is clean: low, thin, and horizontal. Its halogen headlights appear small from head-on, but flow around the front corners into the bulging fenders, creating a line that widens to the rear of the car. It makes a statement that says, we're bold not fancy. The main thing about the 200 is that it's big, for a midsize car, and it's american (also that it's well-equipped and inexpensive).  the rear deck lid looks chopped, with a chrome strip between led taillamps and another chrome bar between the exhaust outlets that widens the look of the car. It bears a wing logo in brushed metal and blue, replacing the old traditional wing logo, to signify the rebirth of chrysler.  the chrysler 200 is not a car that gathers second looks, at least not for its beauty. The seats feel supportive and should be comfortable for long periods behind the wheel.  rear legroom measures just 36. 2 inches, which is on the short side for a midsize car. The rear seat is split 60/40 and folds down for more cargo space, always appreciated.  the instrument panel contains the usual three round gauges, with gray-on-gray graphics that are pleasing to the eye, while its white accent lighting is wonderful at night. The three-spoke steering wheel has a thick leather-wrapped rim and padded hub with controls for the sound system and cruise setting. Armrests are soft, and door pockets roomy. Some models have two usb ports, handy for phone and laptop charging.  the cabin is one of the quietest in the segment, thanks to new sound absorption materials, as well as an acoustic glass windshield, laminated side glass usually found in higher priced vehicles, and new engine mounting for the 2. 4-liter engine. driving impressionthe standard powerplant for the chrysler 200 is the 173-horsepower, 2. 4-liter world engine that chrysler shares with mitsubishi and hyundai. With dual variable valve timing, the power is good at both low and high rpm, and its 166 foot-pounds of torque are sufficient for the demands of its owners. That's about what we got during a week of good seat time in the northwest.  later, we drove a convertible with the top down on a hot summer day near seattle, a. 2007 honda fit review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new subcompact is fun, inexpensive and practical. introductionsubcompact cars are not the penalty boxes they once were. A raft of totally models brings comfort and happy motoring at bargain prices. Honda, toyota, nissan and chevrolet have launched new subcompacts for 2007, while kia and hyundai barely beat them to the party with new models for 2006. They come with wacky names like fit, yaris, versa, aveo, rio and accent. For the most part, they're all delightful, get excellent gas mileage, offer comfortable, reliable transportation, and are highly space efficient. There's not a bad one in the bunch.  the honda fit distinguishes itself with agile handling, zippy performance, and impressive practicality. It's a particularly pleasant car for running errands. It's easy to get in and out. The rear seatbacks can be flipped down to create a big, flat cargo hold. Most of the other cars in this class don't offer such a big, flat floor, and that's crucially important when trying to transport a big box. Alternatively, the seat bottoms can be flipped up, creating a nice cargo hold behind the front seats, handy for groceries and errand running or for tall items, like framed art. Recline the front seats and they form a couch. It retails just below $14,500. Even more compelling is the sport model, which adds 15-inch alloy wheels, a nice stereo, sporty styling cues, and the all-important keyless remote for less than $1,400. Adding to its sensibility, the fit comes standard with six airbags and anti-lock brakes. And it looks like fun. The fit presents a smart ambience, especially a sport model swathed in vivid blue pearl, milano red or blaze orange metallic paint to highlight its massive and colorful headlamp assemblies. lineupthe honda fit is available in two trim levels, the base fit 13,850) and the sport 15,170). It also comes with three-point safety belts for all positions with tensioners for the front seats. Latch child-seat tethers are provided in both rear outboard seats, while the center seat has a built-in, ready-to-use upper tether, allowing child safety seats to be installed in any rear seating location. The fit comes standard with abs and electronic brake-force distribution to help drivers avoid crashes in the first place. walkaroundthe honda fit was designed to offer an active and smart appearance and we think it succeeds. It's aerodynamically sleek and is engineered to make efficient use of interior space.  the interesting headlight bezels match the exterior color of the vehicle. Standard on all models, this body-colored headlight bezel gives the fit a sporty appearance. The doors have three distinct detents to hold the door open at various degrees.  unique among subcompacts, the fit mounts its fuel tank in the center of the car, under the front seats. This allows the floor for the back-seat passengers to be lower, thus increasing space behind the front seats.  the unit-body structure is highly rigid, which is helpful for developing crisp handling response and a smooth ride quality. Stuctural rigidity is also useful for protecting the people inside and honda expects top ratings from the government and insurance industry. Honda achieved strength while keeping weight down by using high-strength steel. A honda fit sport with a manual gearbox weighs 2,471 pounds. That's comparable for the class and considerably lighter than a nissan versa. interiorthe honda fit is comfortable front and back and the interior can be quickly configured to carry big boxes or tall items. All in all, it's a great cabin.  the front seats are supportive, even sporty, far better than what's usually found in subcompacts. The front seats have lots of seat travel, so short and tall people fit in the fit. All models have the same fabric upholstery and it's nice. The seats are done up in an attractive two-tone design that cleverly matches up when the seats are fully reclined. The fabric itself appears nicer and more durable than that of the nissan though not quite as nice as that of the scion xa. The drivers gets lots of headroom, 40. 6 inches, which is as good or better than the other cars in this class, lots of legroom, nearly 42 inches, and hip room, both comparable to the other cars in the class, though the versa is a standout in hip room with its giant front seats.  the back seats are impressively roomy, given the size of the car, and surprisingly comfortable. We put three adults back there for a short drive to lunch and all three were quite content. There's lots of headroom front and rear.  even more impressive are the cargo-carrying options. This makes the fit better for a dog or anything else that benefits from a flat floor without pitfalls. The kia rio5 is also impressive with nearly 50 cubic feet. There's more: fold the rear seatbacks down, then lift the seatbottoms up again. The trunk area is back to the way it was with the seats up, but a big cargo area is now revealed behind the front seats. Leaving the seat behind the driver in this position might be quite useful for grabbing groceries and running errands.  and that's not all! Honda calls this the relaxation mode. It would work well at a drive-in theater if they still existed. It would also be useful when stopping in a rest area for snooze on a long drive, much safer than trying to drive when sleepy.  visibility from the driver's seat is good, with good mirrors and a panoramic windshield, though there's a bit of a blindspot. The fit has a comfortable steering wheel. All of the switchgear (headlights, wipers, power windows, etc.) works well. The center dash is logical.  audio controls are easy to operate. We liked the giant volume knob and the big buttons for the selecting am/. driving impressionthe easygoing nature of the honda fit is even more apparent underway. The engine is smooth and responsive, shifting is easy and it rides nicely.  the fit gets good gas mileage, achieving an epa-estimated 33/38 mpg city/highway with the manual gearbox and.
